Accomplishments 2012-2013
Established in May 2012 The Oceanside Chiefs Rugby Club began as a Division Four team under the Southern California Rugby Football Union (SCRFU). We were very fortunate to win the Division with an 8-2 record and automatic promotion to Division Three for the 2013 season. Concluding our regular season in addition with the playoffs we captured the Division Three title with a 9-0 record. With that title The Chiefs qualified for the Division three National Sweet Sixteen as the #1 seed from So Cal. This yearly event is sanctioned by USA Rugby and features the elite teams from Unions all around the country in three different divisions.
Games were played on May 18-19 in Irving, TX and two weeks later on June 1-2 in Glendale, CO. Our first two games were against a very physically strong team Sierra Foothills RC from Sacramento, CA the fast paced game ended with a 43-20 score in our favor. Recovery was our priority for the next day as we prepared to face a team that was very evenly matched with us. The Barbarians RC from Wichita, KS gave us a huge challenge. Trailing at half time our stout defense booked us a semifinal trip to Glendale, CO with a 43-29 win. We only had two weeks to prepare for what was ahead of us.
We played a game with too many mistakes against an east coast team from Saratoga, NY (Stampede). By scoring two late tries in the last 20mins we were able to advance to the finals. Old Blue RC from the Bronx, NY were a very organized, fit, and well balanced team. The game went into extra time (overtime) with two ten minute halves. With a desperate defense and perfect team work to score two tries in the last five minutes and win with a 44-40 score, we were able to lift the Division Three National Championship Trophy and bring it to Oceanside!
Our team is very young in age and playing experience. We are comprised mostly of former Football and Soccer players from all over North San Diego County area and different parts of the south pacific. We realize and understand that to win the Nationals at any sport with a perfect record of 13-0 will be almost impossible to repeat so with that, we are very humbled by our success in this great sport. We will continue to welcome any potential players and committee members that want to have a positive impact on our team and in our community.
